SMITHSONIAN ASSOCIATES Presents:
"Get in the Act: How to Become a Movie Extra" Sat., July 19, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Washington DC
Hollywood is already filled with stars. But what the movies are looking for is everyone else; the man on the street, the woman in the restaurant, the kid in the elevator.
There are lots of opportunities to be “in the movies” for the rest of us. The average movie has fifty or sixty supporting roles, and hundreds of roles for extras or “background performers”. And these roles are often filled by people with little or no prior experience. Plus there are TV shows, commercials, and training films – all of which are produced in the busy film & TV community of DC, Virginiaand Maryland.
All you need to put yourself in the picture is a little “inside knowledge”.
In this seminar, you’ll learn who to contact and what you need to do to get yourself on the list of people who get called for these roles. You’ll learn some of the basic skills you need to use your face and your voice to create the right character for the role. You’ll hear about the ins and outs of work on a film set. Find out what would be expected of you, and who does what (and what is a “gaffer” anyway?). Plus have the opportunity to participate in a fun practice audition, so you can see exactly what actors have to go through on their way to stardom – only without the pressure.
Whether you’re thinking of a new career, a sideline, or a one-time experience, working in the movies is more possible than you may think.
General Admission $120; Resident Members $85; Senior Members $76
